Toward Species-specific Catch and Cpue Time Series for Sharks Caught by the Japanese Longline Fishery in the Atlantic Ocean

چکیده

This document introduces problems associated with shark catch data and CPUE indices using the Japanese longline fishery in the Atlantic as an example. A number of methods for addressing issues of under-reporting, short time series, and undifferentiated shark species are introduced including reporting rate filtering, comparison to observer datasets, covariate analysis, meta-analysis and tradebased methods. It is argued that status quo analytical techniques will not be sufficient to advance the state of shark databases to the necessary quality for robust stock assessment and that new forms of cooperative analysis are likely to be required.

Long-term changes in CPUE of sharks and size of blue sharks caught by tuna longlines in the western North Pacific Ocean

Motivated by Ward & Myers (2005) that claimed higher impact of longline fishery on large pelagic community including blue shark, long-term comparison of shark CPUE were made using recent and historical data collected by Japanese research and training vessels in the western North Pacific. Standardized species combined shark CPUE (predominated by blue shark catch and assuming that the shark combi...

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE SEVENTH REGULAR SESSION 9-17 August 2011 Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia Analyses of Catch Data for Oceanic Whitetip and Silky Sharks reported by Fishery

This report presents descriptive statistical summaries and generalized linear model (GLM) analyses of catch data for oceanic whitetip shark Carcharhinus longimanus and silky shark C. falciformis in the Hawaii-based pelagic longline fishery. This paper is a collaborative effort begun at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in New Caledonia and completed at the NOAA Fisheries Pacific Is...

Target changes in the tropical WCPO Japanese longline fishery, and their effects on species composition

Executive Summary This paper represents part of the response to the independent review of the 2011 bigeye tuna (BET) stock assessment, specifically the examination of changes in targeting within the Japanese longline fishery operating to the tropical western and central Pacific Ocean (WCPO). This work was undertaken at the National Institute for Far Seas Fisheries (NIFSF) in Shimizu Japan over ...

Application of a habitat-based model to estimate effective longline fishing effort and relative abundance of Pacific bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus)

A new habitat-based model is developed to improve estimates of relative abundance of Pacific bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). The model provides estimates of ‘effective’ longline effort and therefore better estimates of catch-per-unit-of-effort (CPUE) by incorporating information on the variation in longline fishing depth and depth of bigeye tuna preferred habitat. The essential elements in the mo...

Why are there still large pelagic predators in the oceans? Evidence of severe hyper-depletion in longline catch-per-effort

Industrial catch-per-effort (cpue) data are used as an indicator of population abundance and, contrary to strong cautions of potential biases, are often used without regard for spatial interactions as the only data source from which inferences are made. Recent controversy surrounding the status of large predatory pelagic communities has resulted from varying interpretations of the Japanese long...
